Hygiene & Periodontal Treatment
A healthy smile starts with a clean smile. We recommend our patients to come in every six months for a cleaning with our expert dental hygienists. For those needing extra attention to their smile, we offer a periodontal deep cleaning to help prevent or control the effects of gum disease.
Periodontal disease is an oral disease of an inflammatory nature affecting tooth supporting structures.
All mouths contain bacteria, that’s a fact. Much of this bacteria exists within plaque. Plaque is a clear biofilm that exists naturally on your teeth. With a good oral hygiene routine, including brushing, flossing, and routine professional dental cleanings, plaque can be removed from the base of the teeth, and periodontal disease can be prevented.
If, however, plaque is allowed to accumulate due to poor oral hygiene, a process called gingivitis (gum inflammation) will begin.
The bacteria found in plaque, if left untreated, will start to accumulate around the base of your teeth as well as the gum pockets between your teeth. Your body’s immune system will naturally start to respond and part of this response is inflammation.
The result of unattended or untreated inflammation is noteworthy. Gingivitis is one of the first indicators on the path to periodontal disease. Symptoms can include swollen and bright red/purple gums, bleeding during brushing and tenderness/pain. Halitosis (bad breath) is also normally present during gingivitis.
Gingivitis is entirely preventable, and treatable. Our hygienists will assist in the removal of the plaque. If gingivitis is treated early enough, the effects can be reversed without lasting damage.
Gingivitis will ordinarily progress to periodontitis if early action is not taken. This more severe and damaging process happens when bacteria invade deeper into your gums and/or the root structures of your teeth.
The bacteria and inflammation at this stage will eventually cause permanent damage. The bone that supports your teeth can be destroyed and your teeth may become loose and fall out.
Periodontal disease is recognized as the silent killer of teeth. Even teeth that seem white and healthy could be suffering from periodontal disease.
Symptoms of periodontitis include:
- bleeding gums
- swollen gums
- visible hard plaque deposits
- bad breath
- gum recession
A common misunderstanding is that infection and disease of the gums and teeth will not affect your general health. Because pain is not always obvious, it leads some to underestimate the extent of their periodontitis.

Sealants, made of synthetic material, cover a tooth’s surface and are applied to premolars and molars, the two areas where decay happens the most. Dental sealants prevent decay from developing in these unprotected areas. Sealants block food and plaque from accumulating in grooves and depressions on tooth surfaces, drastically reducing the risk of decay as bacteria has no place to grow.
Oral Cancer Screenings
The purpose of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a higher chance for a cure. During your oral cancer screening exam, Dr. Lindahl or his team will look at the inside of your mouth to check for red or white patches and mouth sores. We also may utilize screening technology like VELscope.
