Professional Teeth Cleaning in Maryville

Dental prophylaxis is the technical term for a professional teeth cleaning treatment performed by a dental hygienist. At Rolling Hills Dental, our dental hygienists perform teeth cleaning treatments for our patients at their twice-yearly checkups or more often if the patient suffers from periodontal disease. These professional cleanings keep gingivitis under control, maintain oral health, and stop the progression of gum disease. Good oral hygiene at home is not enough to preserve your dental health.
Benefits of Our Teeth Cleaning
Professional teeth cleaning provides oral health benefits you can’t achieve with brushing and flossing alone, including:
Plaque Removal
Tartar and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems. Unfortunately, even with a proper home brushing and flossing routine, it can be impossible to remove all debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets. The experienced eyes of our dental hygienists and the use of specialized dental equipment are necessary to catch potentially damaging buildup and remove it effectively.
Prevents Cavities and Gum Disease
Regularly scheduled teeth cleanings help protect you against two of the most common oral health issues – cavities and gum disease (periodontitis). Cavities and gum disease can both lead to the need for restorative dental care such as fillings, extractions, dental surgery, or other interventions.
A More Attractive Smile
Stained or yellowed teeth can dramatically affect the aesthetics of your smile. Professional teeth cleaning helps remove stains and yellowing developed over time, brightening your teeth and improving your smile.
Fresher Breath
Chronic bad breath can be an indication of gum disease. Gum pockets along the base of your teeth may collect food debris that rots, leading to gum infection and bad breath. Removing plaque, tartar, debris, and bacteria from your teeth and gum pockets at Rolling Hills Dental halts infection and results in fresher breath.

What to Expect at Your Teeth Cleaning Treatment
During a professional teeth cleaning, one of our dental hygienists will first examine the inside of your mouth with a small mirror to check for any abnormalities and determine the extent of any plaque buildup. They will then remove any plaque using a dental tool called a scaler to scrape away the buildup along the gumline and from between the teeth. Next, an electric toothbrush with a rotating head is used with a slightly gritty paste to clean and polish all surfaces of your teeth.
Next, your hygienist will floss your teeth. If you don’t floss regularly at home, it may feel uncomfortable, but it is essential to reach areas you can’t clean yourself to access difficult-to-reach areas. After flossing, you will be given an oral rinse to wash away any debris.
How to Prevent Tooth Decay and Gum Disease
We recommend that professional teeth cleaning be performed twice annually as a preventative measure. In combination with daily flossing and twice-daily brushing, it is the most effective way to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
However, if you have active periodontitis, professional cleaning should be performed every 3-4 months. Although gum disease cannot be completely reversed, dental prophylaxis can help halt its progression effectively.
