Immediate Dentures IN MARYVILLE & FOR KNOXVILLE & ALCOA TN

A smiling elderly woman with dentures

Immediate dentures are an excellent option for replacing your teeth when the extraction of your remaining teeth is unavoidable. With same-day dentures, you can avoid the embarrassment of missing teeth and the aged look that goes with it. At Rolling Hills Dental, the process begins even before your teeth are extracted, so that you never go a day without dentures.

Our Process

We first take impressions of your existing teeth and gums to create a realistic-looking denture for use immediately after your teeth are removed. At your next appointment, your remaining teeth are extracted, and the immediate dentures are inserted, giving you a beautiful, functional smile the same day.

You will wear your immediate dentures for 24-48 hours without removing them during the initial healing period. This helps protect the surgical sites and reduces swelling.

At follow-up appointments, we will adjust your same-day dentures as the gums continue to heal. We check for sore spots, monitor the fit, and make sure you are satisfied with your immediate dentures throughout this phase. During this time, your jawbone and gums will shrink slightly, and we may add temporary denture liners to cushion the fit for added comfort.

After three to six months, your jawbone and gums will stabilize and a permanent reline can be added to your immediate dentures for the ideal fit. In some cases, we may take additional impressions and create a new, permanent denture to replace your same-day denture to provide the optimal fit.

Aftercare for Same-Day Dentures

Proper oral hygiene and aftercare are crucial to the successful healing of your gums when getting immediate dentures. Please carefully follow the post-extraction care instructions we provide and contact us if you have any symptoms of infection. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Do not remove your same-day dentures for the first 24-48 hours. They help protect the gums and prevent excessive swelling.
  • For swelling of the cheeks, try ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off).
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed to reduce any discomfort.
  • Eat a soft diet that does not require any chewing for the first 48 hours.
  • During the first 2-3 days, there may be mild bleeding. Bite down continuously for ten minutes to slow the bleeding.
  • Do not use mouthwash during the first 48 hours, and do not spit or use a straw, as the suction could dislodge the denture.

After 48 Hours

  • You can remove your immediate dentures. We will demonstrate how to do this at your follow-up appointment.
  • Brush your dentures thoroughly with liquid dish soap and rinse in warm (not hot!) water. Gently rinse your mouth and rub your gums, then let the water drain into the sink before putting your dentures back in place.

Speaking

You may find it difficult to pronounce certain words and sounds with your new, same-day dentures. You will quickly adjust, but reading aloud at home for the first few days can hasten the process.
